On my trip to Bali staying at Tjendana Villa, Nu was the best thing ever happened, the villa was such an amazing place to stay and here I am going to share everything that I have wrapped around my tongue (there is no need to panic, I am talking about food) in their in-villa Bayleaf restaurant.

So the first dish I tried in the villa’s Bayleaf restaurant was a Creamy veg chowder. Though I am not The Gordon Ramsay of cooking, I kind of felt that the chowder was kind of flat, but it did do justice to the creaminess. I come from a place where the food has extra salt and spice, yes, India, so when I tasted this for the first time, I couldn’t easily get adapted to it because it was the first dish I tasted in Bali, hence I guess I can put the blame on me. Though I did regret ordering the dish and struggled halfway through it.

The second dish I tried over there was Indonesian Chicken fried rice and chicken satay. I liked this one, it was like a regular fried rice but Indonesian and the chicken satay was good. It was a dream come true moment when I tried chicken satay, not a very big dream, but a dream that someday I would eat chicken satay.

Oooh this dish was my favourite among the other two and it was called as Jack’s Chicken Breast which also happened to be the signature dish of the restaurant. Coincidence, right? It was creamy and had the right bit of flavor, roasted potatoes went well with the chicken breast.
So after having lunch over there, we went back there again for dinner as well as we didn’t want to check out other restaurants. The dishes we ordered were Japanese tempura, a steak sandwich and carbonara.

When I ordered Japanese Tempura, I expected more of tempuras in my plate and finding only one tempura was kind of disappointing. The rest of it had a very tangy sauce and big noodles much thicker than usual, a kind which I have never tasted before in my life. It was more of a soup noodles and I felt the name was quite misleading. I later found out that it was called as tempura udon which is a hot pot soup with Japanese noodle. Based on other people reviews I realized that the udon noodles are very tasty and as famous as ramen. The noodles were white, probably because eggs weren’t used in the noodle making. The soup is supposed to have a very light flavor but the one I received was too tangy than the tangy I have tasted. The tanginess left us haunted for two days. Ugh. It was unbearably awful to eat and couldn’t proceed after two bites of it! I hope to have Japanese tempura udon someday with its original authentic flavor as it is one of Japan’s favourite dish.

After trying out the tempura, we were really glad that we ordered a sandwich and carbonara. The sandwich was a basic steak sandwich with some roasted potatoes again. The carbonara was actually a carbonara pizza and again the name was misleading for me. But this time I made sure I read the description properly and cleared my questions with the waitress. The pizza didn’t have regular pizza bread, it was thicker and crispier, more like a flat bread. Thankfully that was good and the only dish that filled us for the night. So without doubt I could say the steak sandwich and carbonara pizza won the dinner round.

The breakfast was filling, fresh and a simple buffet. Ramen, scrambled egg, roasted potatoes, breads and different jams, fruits, veggies, boiled corn, fruit juice, tea, coffee, milk, all the regular buffet stuff and sweet cakes & donuts for desserts. I really enjoyed the breakfast each day, nothing to complain about it.

After a day out, the following night I wanted something common to us and so ordered some ice tea, lemon juice, New York Cheese burger and a fruit salad. You would probably wonder why a New York cheese burger in Bali, after the previous night’s encounters all I wanted to do was play safe with food. The New York cheese burger was delicious but I don’t know if that is how an actual New York burger tastes and I am sure it tastes much more delicious in New York. Like they say, native foods should be tasted in the native places.
That is all I have for you from Bayleaf restaurant people. Hope you liked my review on it. Don’t forget to send me your experiences with food. Have a great day!
